Ideas and Jet Ski Kids Life Jacket Reviews - FAQ and Questions
- Are jet skis really that dangerous and do you think they should have rudders?
I grew up with jet skis, and the only problem I see with them really is their uncanny ability to break down and be nearly impossible to repair. When out in the ocean playing around and doing 360's with the kids in the neighborhood (mind you everybody had on a life jacket and was riding with myself and my brother and we are both experienced - i'm a little bit more cautious) when somebody mentioned to me that they were very dangerous and that I was insane for taking a kid out on one. Jet skis are good at leaving bruises. I know this very well. And so do plenty of people. One of the kids who's like 16 was on it with me and didn't hold on and lean when went into the 360 and he flew off. he said it stung when he hit the water, but other than that was fine and was able to climb right back on and try it again. So i did some research. seems like the only thing dangerous about a jet ski is people who have no experience on them and just get out in the water and tear it up. I understand that the jet ski has no stearing when the throttle isn't pressed, but when i hear stories of people being run over out at the beach it makes me wonder what the person on the jet ski was doing going so fast in an area with that many people that they couldn't avoid that. So, my question is, are jet ski's really dangerous in scenarios OTHER THAN collisions.

A you pretty much answered your own question, as far as operator error is resposible in large part for any accidents caused, being overconfident in your abilities is a good way to crash, and as far ar rudders go, the nozzle on the jet ski rotates, this is why the jet ski can turn so fast and toss unwary riders off the side. no need for a rudder, water propulsion seems to do perfectly fine so far.

A Collisions are the most regularly reported issue involving personal watercraft. However, people can get seriously injured or killed without colliding with a vessel, land, or obstruction. A PWC going +50 over VERY large wakes could smash you and/or the passenger into the handlebars or throw you overboard. However, the most likely occurance for hitting a huge wake going +50 would be being thrown off. At 30 to 35 mph and higher, water stops acting like water and starts acting like concrete. The faster you go, the more velocity and damage water does. So yes, you can break bones and really mess yourself up if you fall off at +40mph. Most lakes and boating areas suitable for PWCs are safe as long as you always obey the boating laws and regulations and pay attention to what is going around you at all times. In short, if you carefully study and follow the applicable boater education material and boating laws & regulations that are in your area, you will be fine.
