- Buying a canoe; what else do I need?
We're considering buying a canoe, but want to know what else we'll need with it before deciding whether or not we can afford it. Just looking for a 14-15 footer, to use once or twice a year in a local lake. We know we need oars, life jackets, and maybe a car mount. Are we missing anything? It'll just be an inexpensive or used boat, nothing fancy, and we just want to be sure we have the basics so we can paddle the kids around while camping. Thanks!
A Paddles not oars. The only thing you might add is something to bale out the water. This is easily made from a used plastic jug, something heavy like a bleach jug not a thin milk jug. Just cut away anything that does not look like a scoop and attach it to your canoe with a line. Although not part of your question, if you are looking for a deal on a used canoe, and nothing is available locally, try canoe liveries. Even if you have to drive some distance to a touristy canoeing area it may be worth the money.
